Central Philippine University (CPU) and University of the Philippines-Visayas (UPV) made it to the list of schools with disciplines designated as Centers of Excellence (COE) by Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

According to the definition provided by CHED, COE refers to a department within a higher education institution, which continuously demonstrates excellent performance in the areas of instruction, research and publication, extension and linkages and institutional qualifications.

CPU was named as COE in Agriculture and Business Administration while UPV's College of Fisheries also made it to the list.

Aside from COE tag, CHED also designates Center of Development (COD) recognition to departments within a higher education institution which demonstrate the potential to become a COE in the future.

The following Iloilo schools and respective departments were listed as CODs:
CPU: Chemical Engineering
WVSU Lambunao: Agriculture, Forestry
WVSU Main: Nursing
ISCOF Barotac Nuevo: Fisheries

See full list of CHED COEs and CODs here.

The designation of COE and COD is valid for three years effective January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018 or until sooner terminated, revoked or cancelled for cause/non-compliance with the provisions of the relevant Implementing Guidelines for Identification, Support and Development of COEs and CODs.

The designated COEs and CODs may avail of funding assistance from CHED for research and instructional capability building, research projects and networking, extension and linkages activities.
