125 ICCC students get P40,000 subsidy
A total of 125 students of Iloilo City Community College (ICCC) received their Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) April 30.
The recipients received P20,000 each per semester or a total of P40,000 for school year 2018-2019.
“This will be of big help to our students because aside from free tuition and miscellaneous fees, they were given subsidy,” ICCC administrator Catalina Sanico said.
The subsidy can be used for books, supplies, board fees, transportation, and other education-related expenses.
Sanico said they submitted the names of all 426 students of ICCC, and 125 were qualified by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
Liza Ganancial, 19 of Barangay East Timawa, Molo, said she plans to use the money to buy a laptop.
“I am planning to buy a laptop which I could use for my studies and the rest will be given to my parents,” Ganancial said. Her parents work as farmers in Guimaras.
“Actually, I am planning to work this summer so that I have money once the classes open, however, since I have summer classes, I could not do it,” Ganancial added. She is an incoming second year student of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration (BSOA).
Thelma Iglesia, 44, of Barangay Caingin, La Paz, said the financial subsidy will be of big help to support the studies of her 19-year-old daughter Krissia Mae, also an incoming second year BSOA student.
“For an underprivileged parent like me, this is very helpful for my daughter who is studying. My husband works as taxi driver but what he earned for a day is not enough since I have four other children living with us,” said Iglesia, a housewife.
TES is one of the programs of the national government under Republic Act No. 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.
It is given to poor but deserving students enrolled in the 112 state universities and colleges, 78 local universities and colleges in the country, and whose names are included in the Listahanan 2.0 of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta/Iloilo City PIO)
