The banning period has prevented the Iloilo City government from proceeding with the construction of school buildings intended for the K to 12 program but the assurance is there that it will get started as soon as the election period is over.

Joren Sartorio, head of the bids and awards committee and chief of the city general services office of the city government, said that the construction of eight school buildings as a major legacy of city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog in six city national high schools will start after the May 9 elections.

Sartorio said they are prepared to undertake the bidding process but was unable to get an exemption from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The city government contracted a loan of P360 million for the construction of the schools earmarked for the June 2016 school opening. The fund is now held in trust with the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP).

“But everything is already in place for the school building construction after the elections,” Sartorio assured.

To be constructed are the eight units of four-storey school buildings with 20 classrooms per building at the cost of about P45 million each. It will be patterned after the design of classrooms that are built by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

Sartorio said the PAGCOR schools cost some Php40 million each while the city schools cost about Php45 million each to include the land fill component.

Beneficiary schools are the Mandurriao National High School in Mandurriao district, TCT-AR Foundation Integrated School in Jaro district, Fort San Pedro National High School in the City Proper and Jalandoni Memorial National High School in Lapuz district with one building each.

Meanwhile, the Iloilo City National High School in Molo district and Jaro City National High School in Jaro district will have two buildings each. [via PNA]
