A Market Reborn: Iloilo Welcomes a New Chapter of Trade and Togetherness

Ilonggos witnessed a historic moment as the newly redeveloped Iloilo Central and Terminal Markets—together with the opening of SM at Iloilo Central Market and SM at Iloilo Terminal Market—officially marked a new chapter of commerce, culture, and community in the city.

What were once traditional market hubs have now evolved into modern, people-centered destinations that honor Iloilo’s heritage while embracing possibilities for the future.

A Symbol of Growth, Culture, and Sustainability

The redevelopment and simultaneous launch of SM’s retail spaces within the markets represent more than structural upgrades; they reflect Iloilo’s bold vision of inclusive and sustainable urban growth.

With improved vendor facilities, enhanced safety and sanitation, eco-friendly features, and thoughtfully curated tenant mixes, the revitalized markets showcase what can be achieved through strong public-private partnerships.

The presence of SM inside both markets demonstrates a shared commitment to uplifting local commerce, supporting micro-entrepreneurs, and elevating the overall market-going experience. Together, these developments strengthen Iloilo’s position as a national model for modern public markets—places where innovation and tradition coexist.

A Community Celebration

The opening day saw impressive foot traffic as shoppers, local tourists, vendors, and families flocked to the redeveloped spaces.
Social media buzzed with excitement as Ilonggos posted photos of the new facilities, expressing pride in what many describe as a long-awaited transformation.

Many praised the improved comfort, organized layout, and mix of local favorites alongside SM’s curated retail and food concepts.
The feedback online and on-ground echoed the same sentiment: these new spaces were worth waiting for.

Voices From the Ground

Tenants, both long-time vendors and those inside SM-operated areas, shared their appreciation for the redevelopment:
“Daku gid nga bulig ang bag-o nga merkado kag ang pagsulod sang SM. Mas limpyo, mas organized, kag mas nami ang dalagan sang negosyo (The new market and SM’s presence are a big help—cleaner, more organized, and better for business),” said Chris Belandres, a veteran Terminal Market vendor.

“Comfortable na gid mag-shopping. Nami ang mix sang local vendors kag SM stores. May bag-o pero ara gihapon ang pagka-local (Shopping is much more comfortable now. The mix of local vendors and SM stores is great. It’s new, but still feels local),” added Angel of Jaro, shopper enjoying the Terminal Market.

Strengthening Iloilo’s Story

More than elevating physical spaces, the simultaneous opening of the redeveloped markets and SM establishments reinforces Iloilo’s identity as a city built on collaboration.

The project highlights how the LGU, SM, vendors, and the community can work together to create public spaces that uplift livelihoods and celebrate culture.

As Iloilo steps into this new chapter, these markets symbolize resilience, unity, and the shared desire to build a future where growth benefits everyone.
