All set for Iloilo city sanitary landfill

Everything is set for the full implementation of Iloilo city sanitary landfill with the recent loan approval of P297,557,000 by the Development Bank of the Philippines Monetary Board.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod, on the other hand, passed Resolution 2012-1404 last November 28, 2012 confirming the term loan agreement, the General Conditions applicable to the term loan agreement under the DBP retail lending, the continuing Deed of Assignment with hold-out and the Chattel Mortgage entered into and between the city headed by city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Atty. Ninfa Aboboto, DBP senior vice president and head of the Iloilo branch.

Iloilo sanitary landfill is a major project of the Mabilog Administration earmarked to be completed before the end of 2013 in the apportioned area of13 hectares inside the more than 23 hectares Calajunan open dumpsite.

The whole area is now being readied for the eventual construction of the sanitary landfill and road improvement going to the site while closure and development of the old dumpsite into an ecological park is ongoing. The Calajunan dumpsite will also provide 5,000 square meters for toxic and hospital wastes.

Mabilog said the sanitary landfill project is a requirement provided under Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and included in his five major 2012-2013 legacy projects worth some P2 billion after completing his 2010-2012 projects worth more than P1 billion this year.

Aside from the almost P300 million sanitary landfill project, the 2012-2013 legacy projects are the ongoing construction of the Iloilo City riverplains relocation subdivision worth more than P300 million at Brgy. Lanit, Jaro and Brgy. Sooc, Arevalo for displaced riverbank dwellers and other informal settlers along the danger zones, the soon to start P165 million Iloilo-Guimaras ferry terminal, central market rehabilitation and the drainage master plan.

Already completed and inaugurated in 2010-2012 are legacy projects such as the imposing eight storey new cityhall worth more than P600 million, community college worth P130 million donated by a private corporation, city hospital worth more than P50 million at the Western Visayas Medical Center Complex, Esplanade Park worth more than P40 million and the wetlands and bird sanctuary assisted by the Panay Energy Development Corp. and Global Power Corp.

Targeted for completion before then end of 2015 are infrastructure projects such as the Maternity Hospital in La Paz district, roro port facility in Lapuz district, Iloilo-Negros ferry terminal also in Lapuz district, complete restoration of heritage buildings at the central business districts, and the Iloilo City international convention center at the old airport site in Mandurriao district.
