Defensor affirms stand on opening of classes

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. has reaffirmed his stand to forego the opening of classes in August as the coronavirus remains a threat in the country.

The governor supports Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s statement of not allowing classes to open until a vaccine is made available.

Defensor said the province should prioritize two things – containing the virus and reviving the economy.

“During these times, we only have to take care of two things. One is the containment of COVID-19. Number two is the economy. All our resources, all our time should be focused on these. All the things we can forego for 2020, we should forego,” he said during an interview with the press Tuesday morning.

Defensor said that while the opening of school would ramp up the economy, it is not worth the risk as the safety of children is at stake.

“If you were to ask me, it is not worth the risk. It is something I can forego. And I will forego,” he said.

The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier announced that the school year 2020-2021 will open on August 24. (via Balita Halin sa Kapitolyo Facebook)
