Gov. Defensor Pushes for Direct Iloilo–Korea Flight in Meeting with Korean Ambassador

Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr and Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-Hwa

Iloilo Governor Arthur “Gid” Defensor Jr. renewed efforts to establish a direct Iloilo–South Korea flight during the courtesy visit of Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Sang-hwa at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol on January 26.

Governor Defensor raised the proposal as part of broader discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Iloilo Province and South Korea, particularly in the areas of tourism, trade, infrastructure, education, information technology, and manpower development.

The governor noted that plans for a direct Iloilo–Seoul route were previously initiated but were stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized that reviving the plan remains a priority, citing Iloilo’s growing international profile and the presence of around 500 Korean residents in the province. According to Defensor, a direct flight would significantly boost tourism arrivals, economic exchanges, and people-to-people connectivity between Iloilo and South Korea.

Ambassador Lee, meanwhile, commended the province’s partnership with the Korean government, particularly highlighting the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project Stage II (JRMP II), which was funded through South Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) via the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF). He described the project as a “game changer” and a strong example of an effective flood control initiative.

The ambassador also expressed optimism over the Panay–Guimaras–Negros Bridge Project, another major infrastructure undertaking supported by the Korean government, calling it a landmark development for Western Visayas.

On a lighter note, Governor Defensor shared his personal appreciation for Korean culture and cuisine, saying Korean food is a regular part of his household and that he enjoys cooking it himself.

Ambassador Lee was accompanied by representatives of the Philippines-Korea Economic Council and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry–Iloilo Chapter (PCCI Iloilo), led by President Fulbert Woo.

The meeting reaffirmed Iloilo’s commitment to expanding international partnerships and positioning the province as a key gateway for regional and global connectivity.
