Iloilo City continues to cement its reputation as the country’s model for sustainable mobility after receiving the first-ever Katipunan Award, the highest distinction given at the 2025 Mobility Awards held in Quezon City on November 25.
The Katipunan Award represents the pinnacle of recognition for transformative initiatives that promote active mobility—particularly mainstreaming bicycle commuting and building pedestrian-friendly environments. According to award organizers, the Katipunan category is the most challenging achievement, attainable only by scoring a perfect 4.0 rating in a given year or by securing three consecutive Gold Awards as a city, workplace, or establishment.
This year, Iloilo City not only earned its historic Katipunan Award but also achieved its third Gold Award for being a Bike-Friendly City, alongside a Silver Award for being Pedestrian-Friendly, solidifying its place as one of the nation’s leading champions of people-centered transport.
The awards were received on behalf of Mayor Raisa Treñas by Arch. Wilfredo Sy, Jr., EnP, Iloilo Bike Festival Director and member of the Iloilo City Bicycle Council.
Mayor Raisa Treñas: “Pedaling Toward Excellence”
In a statement, Mayor Raisa Treñas highlighted the collective pride and effort behind the city’s latest milestone:
“As proud Ilonggos, we celebrate Iloilo City for earning the first-ever Katipunan Award at the 2025 Mobility Awards, the highest recognition for sustainable mobility in the country. This honor highlights our transformational efforts in promoting biking as a mainstream transport and creating pedestrian-friendly spaces.
Together with our third Gold Award for Bike-Friendly City and Silver Award for Pedestrian-Friendly City, this achievement reflects Iloilo’s commitment to a safer, greener, and more accessible city for all.”
Mayor Treñas also received a congratulatory message from Mayors for Good Governance (M4GG), further underscoring the city’s leadership in sustainable and inclusive mobility.
A National Model for Active Mobility
The recognition affirms Iloilo City’s long-running investments in mobility infrastructure, including its expansive bike lane network, protected bicycle pathways, pedestrian improvements, citywide mobility events, and its promotion of safe, accessible road spaces.
The city’s Mobility Awards performance also positions Iloilo as a beacon for other local governments aiming to adopt progressive, climate-resilient mobility solutions.
With the breakthrough Katipunan Award, Iloilo City not only celebrates a major milestone but also amplifies its commitment to building a future where movement is safer, cleaner, and designed for people first.
