Iloilo’s modern Doppler radar station now operational

The state-of-the-art Doppler radar station of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in Iloilo is now operational.

Considered as the most modern and advanced in the country, the Iloilo Synoptic and Doppler Radar Station is located at the compound of Western Visayas Agricultural Research Center (WESVIARC) of Department of Agriculture (DA) in Barangay Hamungaya, Jaro.

The completion of the first Doppler radar station and its complex in Western Visayas worth some P120 million will further boost efforts of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to enhance forecasting, accuracy and timeliness of weather conditions in the region.

The radar has a coverage of 300 to 400 kms, covering the entire region. It is equipped with an entirely new weather monitoring facilities including brand new basic meteorological equipment and a robust communication system.

It is operating 24 hours in 2700-2900 MHz in S Band and will supplement the existing 12 Automated Weather Stations (AWS), 13 Automated Rain Gauges (ARGs) and three Water Level Sensors (WLS) of the region. [Image credits: RMN Iloilo]
