Leaders from government, business, and industry across Western Visayas gathered in Iloilo City for a regional economic dialogue aimed at safeguarding the local economy amid rising global tensions.
The event, titled “Resilient Leadership: Strategy and Strength Amid Global Uncertainties,” was convened by the Economic Development Committee (EDC) of the Regional Development Council (RDC) VI at the Ker & Company Ltd. Building in Iloilo City Proper. It brought together economic experts, national agencies, and private sector representatives to discuss strategies to cushion the region from the effects of ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East.
Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas, who chairs the EDC Region VI, delivered the opening message and underscored the urgency of collective action.
“Now more than ever, there is a strong need for us to reinforce our cooperation and stand united so that we can confront, and hopefully lessen, the impact of the ongoing global crisis on our local economy and ultimately on the lives of the people of Western Visayas,” Treñas said.
She added that while the full extent of the crisis’ impact remains uncertain, early collaboration and open dialogue among stakeholders are key to building resilience.
“We do not yet know the full extent of how these global tensions will affect our region. But by coming together at this early stage, by openly discussing the challenges before us, and by sharing possible solutions, we gain strength and hope for our people,” she said.
As part of her report, the mayor highlighted measures already being implemented by the Iloilo City Government to mitigate the effects of rising fuel costs. These include the rollout of fuel subsidies for tricycle drivers, with plans to extend assistance to jeepney drivers, as well as the enforcement of a four-day workweek and energy-saving initiatives across government offices.
Keynote speakers during the dialogue included economist Jonathan Ravelas of Reyes Tacandong & Co., who tackled the current macroeconomic landscape; Dr. Winston Conrad Padojinog of the Center for Research and Communication, who discussed global developments and their regional implications; and Department of Economic Planning and Development Region VI Director Arecio Casing Jr., who outlined strategies for navigating economic uncertainties.
The dialogue also featured sector-focused discussions on electricity conservation, business resiliency, food security, and community-level preparedness, with insights from industry leaders, the Department of Agriculture, and local government offices.
Organizers emphasized that the forum serves as a proactive platform to align regional strategies, ensuring that Western Visayas remains resilient in the face of evolving global challenges.
