PECO: Rotational brownouts on Feb. 9 due to NGCP 12-hour shutdown

Panay Electric Company (PECO) announced that Iloilo City consumers may experience rotational brownouts on Sunday, February 9 due to scheduled 12-hour power shutdown of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory posted on their Facebook account Friday, PECO Administrative Manager Marcelo U. Cacho said that NGCP will perform maintenance work on their transformer and switchyard, which will result to unavailability of supply from the Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) coal plant.

PECO plans to source power from Panay Power Corp.(PPC) diesel plant, Palm Concepcion Power Corporation (PCPC) contract and Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) to augment the needs of the city, but it may not be enough.

“We may experience possible load-shedding if the consumption of the city exceeds the capacity of both the diesel plant and PCPC/WESM capacities. We will have to load-shed two of our feeder lines at a time with a combined capacity of 8 megawatts. As such, there is a possibility that our service area will experience rotational brownouts during the NGCP shutdown,” Cacho said.

Cacho did not specify which service areas or feeders will be affected, but he assured that “we will be prioritizing residential areas and will request our larger customers to assist us by running their gensets to augment the power supply.”

“We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for bearing with us. Rest assured that we at PECO are doing our best to provide our valued consumers with uninterrupted power,” he concluded.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE UPCOMING SCHEDULED POWER INTERRUPTION OF NGCP

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) will be implementing a 12-hour power shutdown on Sunday, February 9, 2020, from 6:00am to 6:00pm, due to maintenance work that will be done on their transformer and switch yard supplying the city. As a result, supply from the Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) coal plant will be unavailable.

To hopefully avert a power interruption, we plan to run the Panay Power Corp.(PPC) diesel plant with a total net capacity of 50 megawatts for the period of the outage. We will utilize the embedded direct connection between PECO and PPC, line 2 & line 4, to facilitate the supply of power. We will likewise source supply from our Palm Concepcion Power Corporation (PCPC) contract and Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) thru line 5 to further augment the supply needs of the city.

However, we may experience possible load-shedding if the consumption of the city exceeds the capacity of both the diesel plant and PCPC/WESM capacities. We will have to load-shed two of our feeder lines at a time with a combined capacity of 8 megawatts. As such, there is a possibility that our service area will experience rotational brownouts during the NGCP shutdown. Rest assured that we will be prioritizing residential areas and will request our larger customers to assist us by running their gensets to augment the power supply.

Again, we apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for bearing with us. Rest assured that we at PECO are doing our best to provide our valued consumers with uninterrupted power.
