St. Therese MTC Colleges wins Iloilo leg of Pinoy bread baking tilt

A duo of young bakers from St. Therese MTC Colleges – La Fiesta site wins the Visayas leg of Tinapay Natin Pinoy Bread Baking Competition held in Iloilo City recently.

Winning duo of Roy Tabocolde and Greegy Cabarrubias with Iloilo’s master chef Rafael Jardeleza Jr., chef Ed Bugia, MCB’s Monette Aldos, and representatives from Pilmico.

Roy Tabocolde and Greegy Cabarrubias bested eight other teams from the best culinary schools in the Visayas for the best breads and compelling story to emerge as the judges’ favorite in the competition held Friday, September 23.

Tabocolde and Cabarrubias baked their version of Cagayan pastel for regional bread, and made Ensaymada Royale as their modern bread entry.

Spearheaded by Pilmico in partnership with Max’s Corner Bakery, Tinapay Natin aims to encourage the youth to take part in honoring and revitalizing the Filipinos colorful bread culture. It also aims to highlight how bread represents local pride and produce, supporting our rich food history, and empowers community bakeries to become storytellers for the land and the people.

The initiative is inspired by the Mahalin Pagkaing Atin movement, an advocacy aimed at amplifying the role of every Filipino as a producer and guardian of our food heritage.

The winning team won Php 10,000 worth of gift certificates from Max’s Restaurant, plus a chance to get exclusive training from Pilmico Research and Training Bakery.

They will also represent Visayas at the Grand Finals which will be held on October 13, from 9AM to 3PM at Treston International College (University Parkway District, 32nd Street corner C-5 Road, Bonifacio Global City).

The grand winner will receive a cash prize of Php 50,000.00, plus a trophy and medal. In addition to this, at least one of their bread entries will be sold and distributed at Max’s Corner Bakery outlets around the country.

“Our vision for this competition is to inspire young people, bakers, and producers to appreciate local recipes, as well as bring more love for food,” said Pamela Lynne Liwag, brand and quality manager of Pilmico, in a statement

“Aside from being wowed by their baking skills, we would like to hear the bread stories of our students.”

Norie Bermudez, vice president for sales of Pilmico, added: “Our hope is for these young bakers joining the competition to serve as our ambassadors of bread culture in every bite.”
