Treñas extends class suspension and bans students from malls, cafés

Mayor Jerry Treñas announcement.

Mayor Jerry Treñas has extended the suspension of classes in all levels both in private and public schools in Iloilo City to April 14, 2020. Students are also advised to stay at home as they are banned from entering malls, restaurants, coffee shops and similar establishments.

“The cancellation of classes in all levels will be extended until April 14, 2020 as all students are required to stay at home and be safe to prevent the spread of the virus,” said Treñas through his official Facebook account.

“I know this is hard especially now that we don’t have positive cases. Let us not wait and panic when the time comes. A little sacrifice now will save lives tomorrow.”

Treñas earlier issued Executive Order No. 49 suspending classes in Iloilo City until March 31. He also strongly advised students to practice personal voluntary quarantine at home to avoid crowded places or public gatherings.

“During the 14-day period, students are also prohibited from entering or patronizing malls, bars, coffee shops, computer shops, and other similar establishments where social distancing cannot be observed,” the Order reads.

School activities such as proms, graduation, moving up, recognition and other such activities are also prohibited.

Warning to violators

Treñas appealed to business owners and school administrators to follow his directives and warned violators of his executive orders.

“Please be informed that we will be very strict in our ban of mass gatherings and school activities. We are ready to cancel the permits of those schools and establishments that will allow mass gatherings for the duration of our ban as stated in the Executive Order.

“This is a warning. Public health, safety and interest are at stake here, and we will ensure that our people are safe. Strict voluntary quarantine will be enforced. The PSTMO (Public Safety and Traffic Management Office) and PNP (Philippine National Police) will be called upon to enforce the same,” said Treñas.
