Four hundred fourteen students, 14 instructors, and 12 areas of Chinese language and culture are coming together in Iloilo as Sun Yat Sen High School of Iloilo and Taishan University of China deepen their educational partnership through a 10-day Chinese Culture Camp running from August 4 to 14.
The camp brings 14 instructors from Taishan University to Iloilo to teach all 414 high school students of Sun Yat Sen High School, giving them an immersive experience in Chinese language, culture, traditional arts, and education.
The initiative goes beyond language lessons, with school officials describing the partnership as a bridge between heritage, education, and global opportunities.
During a press conference, Walter Uy, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, emphasized the broader value of the initiative, describing the camp as more than a regular school activity.
“This camp is more than an activity—it is an opportunity for students to grow academically, culturally, and personally. It prepares them for a future where global cooperation is essential.”
The partnership with Taishan University builds on Sun Yat Sen’s tradition of promoting Chinese education and preserving Chinese culture within the Philippine community.
For Merlinda Castañeda, ADC of the Elementary Department, the cultural activities give students a meaningful opportunity to learn through direct experience.
“These activities allow students to experience Chinese traditions firsthand. They inspire creativity, discipline, and respect for cultural heritage, while also promoting harmony and friendship.”
Students are being introduced to Chinese painting, songs and music, calligraphy, traditional Chinese instruments including the hulusi flute, Chinese dance, clay sculpture, paper cutting, Chinese embroidery, communication, Chinese poetry, Wushu, and the culture of Mountain Tai.
The activities are designed to make cultural learning more engaging while allowing students to explore Chinese traditions through art, music, language, and movement.
Dr. Norivi Lorca, English Principal, underscored how cultural exchange can contribute to a broader understanding among students.
“Sharing culture builds understanding and respect. It enriches education by teaching values of discipline, creativity, and harmony.”
Lorca also pointed to the importance of international exposure in preparing students for the future.
“By exposing students to international education systems, bilingual learning, and cultural exchange, they will gain confidence, adaptability, and the skills needed to thrive in a global environment.”
The partnership also aims to strengthen Mandarin education through improved teaching strategies, learning resources, language activities, and opportunities for collaboration with Chinese educators.
For Go, Qiong Mei Ni, Chinese Principal, language learning and cultural appreciation can provide students with opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.
“Language and culture are powerful tools. By mastering Mandarin and appreciating Chinese traditions, students gain an edge in international education and careers.”
Beyond the current 10-day camp, the partnership is envisioned to provide opportunities for educational visits, cultural immersion programs, study tours, summer programs, and future student exchanges.
It may also open pathways for Sun Yat Sen students interested in pursuing further studies in China, including Chinese-language programs and potential university, scholarship, and other academic opportunities.
The collaboration also seeks to support teachers through workshops, classroom observations, and exchanges of teaching practices, particularly in Chinese-language and cultural education.
For Sun Yat Sen, Chinese education is not simply about learning Mandarin. It is also about helping students understand their cultural roots while developing the knowledge, skills, confidence, and global perspective needed for the future.
The school sees its cooperation with Taishan University as a bridge connecting universities and schools, teachers and students, tradition and innovation, and local education with global opportunities.
