'Teach me how to Facebook' program for the elderly in Iloilo

Iloilo Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog on Wednesday announced the “Teach Me how to Facebook” program to train the estimated 5,000 elderly here.

The training on use of Facebook will be given through the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) and will be offered as long as there are interested “students.”

“We have noticed that some (of the senior citizens) after retirement have nothing to do and no longer connected with what’s happening outside. They also get weak and found themselves bored,” Mabilog said.

He added that while some were already active in Facebook still there were others that need to be updated of the latest technology.

The “Teach me how to Facebook” will be held at the Iloilo Community College (ICC) just across the OSCA.

The training is expected to start in the next two weeks.

They will be trained by batches, Mabilog added.

In 2011, the city government has institutionalized its Senior Tour Guide program.

Last week the Sangguniang Panlungsod passed an ordinance that will allow free movies to senior citizens every Tuesday.

There is also an ongoing encoding of names of senior citizens for them to avail of the one percent fund in the city government’s budget. (Source:PNA)
