Blue swimming crab hatchery to rise in Banate, Iloilo

The Iloilo Provincial Government has turned over ₱5 million in financial assistance to the Municipality of Banate for the establishment of a Blue Swimming Crab hatchery, a project aimed at boosting local fisheries production and creating more livelihood opportunities for fisherfolk.

The funding will support the construction and initial establishment of the hatchery facility, which is expected to strengthen blue swimming crab production in the municipality while promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.

Banate Mayor Peter Paul Gonzales, together with municipal officials, received the check from Juanito Acanto Jr. during a turnover ceremony conducted by the Iloilo Provincial Government.

Local officials described the project as a significant investment in the municipality’s fisheries sector, particularly in sustaining the production of “Kasag” or blue swimming crab, Banate’s One Town One Product (OTOP) and one of its most important economic resources.

Once operational, the hatchery is expected to help stabilize the supply of blue swimming crabs in the local market, support year-round production, and reduce pressure on natural crab populations through sustainable aquaculture practices.

The initiative is also seen as a major boost for the livelihoods of fisherfolk and coastal communities, while strengthening Banate’s position as a center for fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism development in northern Iloilo.

Provincial officials said the project reflects the continued commitment of the Iloilo Provincial Government, led by Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., to support sustainable development programs that enhance food security, create economic opportunities, and empower local communities.

The hatchery is expected to contribute to stronger fisheries production, a more stable local crab industry, and the long-term growth of Banate’s economy, which is closely linked to its thriving blue swimming crab sector.
