The Province of Iloilo is buying five respirators to augment the capacity of the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) in battling the Covid-19 pandemic, disclosed Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.

A respirator is machine that helps a patient breathe, pumping oxygen into the lungs and removes carbon dioxide through a tube inserted into a person’s windpipe.

Covid-19 is an infectious disease that causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty of breathing.

Defensor, however, did not disclose the budget allocated for these machines, which are badly needed amid the growing number of suspected Covid-19 patients at the WVMC.

The WVMC in Mandurriao district in Iloilo City, which is under the Department of Health, has been designated as the Covid-19 referral hospital for severe patients.

Defensor also revealed that the Capitol continues to buy locally-made personal protective equipment, disinfectant and food to be given to medical frontliners. (Balita Halin sa Kapitolyo)
