Iloilo City stands proud as a shining example of urban development harmoniously blending with culture, history, and natural beauty. One of the city’s most distinct features is its stunning network of Esplanades and Plazas — urban green spaces that are not just for recreation, but are living symbols of Iloilo’s heritage and progress.
While many cities in the Philippines are rapidly modernizing, only Iloilo City has managed to create such a unique identity with its Esplanades and heritage plazas. These spaces offer more than just aesthetics — they reflect the Ilonggos’ deep respect for history, community, and the environment.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas takes great pride in these vibrant developments, whose energy now resonates throughout the community, transforming them into cherished gathering places for families, friends, and visitors alike.

“I am overjoyed to see everyone enjoying these spaces, which serve as beautiful enhancements to our city and heartfelt reflections of what we can achieve when we come together. Creating a good place for everyone to live and ensuring a safe, welcoming environment has always been one of my dreams. With every development and each initiative we introduce, I feel we are now experiencing the fruits of our labor firsthand,” the city mayor expressed.
The Iloilo River Esplanade, stretching along the banks of the Iloilo River, is a marvel of sustainable urban planning. What was once a neglected riverbank has now transformed into a vibrant linear park, where locals and tourists alike can walk, jog, or simply enjoy the gentle breeze and scenic views. It’s a favorite spot for families, fitness enthusiasts, and nature lovers.
With the success of the original Esplanade, more extensions were developed, creating a network of riverfront parks that connect various parts of the city. This transformation not only improved the environment but also became a model for other cities in the country.
The heritage plazas of Iloilo City are equally captivating. Each plaza, often located in front of historic churches and old buildings, tells a story of Iloilo’s colonial past and rich cultural roots. Plazas like those in Jaro, Molo, Plaza Libertad, Arevalo, Mandurriao and Lapaz are beautifully restored, preserving their classic charm while adding modern touches.
These plazas are more than tourist spots — they’re where life happens. From community gatherings to cultural performances, they remain central to the Ilonggo way of life.
A visit to Iloilo is not complete without seeing cultural landmarks such as the Molo Mansion, a beautifully preserved heritage house just across the iconic Molo Plaza. Once the home of a prominent Ilonggo family, the mansion was acquired by SM and now serves as a lifestyle place with Kultura Filipino and homegrown businesses showcasing local crafts, delicacies, and artistry.
With its grand architecture and elegant interiors, the Molo Mansion stands as a perfect symbol of Iloilo’s rich history and refined taste.
Iloilo has indeed come a long way. From a quiet provincial city, it has grown into one of the most livable and admired urban centers in the country. Yet, in all its growth, Iloilo never lost its soul. Its Esplanades and Plazas are proof that progress doesn’t have to come at the cost of beauty or heritage.
“Thanks to our collaboration with the private sector and national agencies, Iloilo now stands at the forefront of progress. I am deeply grateful for the partnerships that have elevated Iloilo to greater heights,” the city mayor added.
As the sun sets along the Esplanade or as lights twinkle over a busy plaza, one can’t help but feel proud — this is Iloilo City. Beautiful, historic, and always moving forward.
